The STK Story
Save The Kid Fund (STK) is a charity dedicated to improve the lives of children by providing
them with opportunities they may not otherwise receive or by providing financial support medical treatments,
medications or adaptive equipment. STK was started in 1985 by a member of the Health Physics Department here at
Millstone Nuclear Power Station. When Connecticut passed a bottle deposit bill he suggested that soda can
refund money be used to sponsor a child through Save The Children, Inc. Well, more and more people started
donating their cans and Mike's wife rebelled over all the cans in the basement. It was decided to form Save
The Kid and thus more of us helped with the can refunding and a children's charity was born. As our "can income"
increased we sponsored more children, "our kids," who now number three.
STK incorporated here in Connecticut is a non-profit children's charity and filed with the IRS
as a 501.c.3 non-profit as well. We grew slowly at first, as more soda can collection points were placed around the
Millstone site. We diversified our fundraising by selling cashews, pistachios, outage shirts, and chocolates. In 1993
we started raffling off motorcycles and in 1995 Millstone management made it possible for employees to donate to STK via
payroll deduction. Those last two ventures significantly increased our income; consequently our aid to children
has dramatically increased. To date Save the Kid Fund has spent over $500,000 helping children.
STK is governed by a 12 member Board of Directors, under rules set forth in our bylaws, and
constitution. We have 4 officers who serve two year terms. Every year the Board nominates and elects two of the
officers. When openings occur on the Board, the membership is notified and volunteers are asked to apply. A
committee of the Board interviews the candidates and makes a recommendation to the Board. The Board then selects
the new member. The membership as defined in the bylaws as all Dominion employees active and retired and retired
Millstone employees. We have an extremely low overhead. For fiscal year 2004-2005 our administrative operating
expenses were less than 1% of our income. This is due to the all volunteer nature of the children's charity.

Many children with physical disabilities could use an adaptive cycle.
These bikes are custom built and cost an average of $1500, a price few families can afford when faced
with long term medical bills. The bike is something that children enjoy for hours each day, and serves up a
large helping of pride in accomplishment. We have been so impressed with the effects that these cycles have that
we have created our first channeled effort called The FREEDOM PROGRAM.
This program's purpose is to provide children with physical disabilities these special cycles in larger volume.
In the 2 years Save the Kid Fund has purchased over 80 special needs bicycles for children to ride for both
fun and therapy. Ironically, the vendor whom Save the Kid Fund uses is himself physically disabled and uses a wheelchair.
When children who also use wheelchairs meet Scott, who is as positive thinking as people can be, they have instant
rapport.

Several handicap ramps have been or will soon be built at the homes of children with physical disabilities.
A special shower seat was installed to permit a young lady the opportunity to take a shower safely.
STK purchased leg braces for a 7 year boy whose parents were struggling with medical bills.
STK has purchased baby supplies and a large supply of diapers for a 6 month old baby on a feeding tube, while
recovering from a series of surgeries to put in place her organs that were outside of her body at
birth. With all the special needs of this child, mom could not afford to buy diapers.
And the list goes on.
We at STK feel very strongly about what we do. We realize that we are fortunate to have good jobs
and stable careers. We feel that along with that comes a responsibility to help those in our communities that are
less fortunate. We wish to thank all those who have given us soda cans, purchased raffle tickets or just plain gave
time and effort to make STK sucessful. We also send special thanks to the management
of Millstone Station who have not only supported us, but have encouraged us to continue our efforts and appluaded
our success.
